Spring Collection - Refraction Vessels

“The series of paintings that I’ve worked on through this winter is based on the theme of refraction. As light passes through a prism and is refracted - bent - so ideas and information pass through us and are transformed, colored by our thoughts, translated by our words, given new context as they settle into our lives. This thread is explored through three different types of vessels: rooms as vessels, boats as vessels, glass as vessels.”

The series began by creating eighteen 9x12 works on paper, integrating photo transfer, oils, ink, charcoal, pastel and wet gesso. These initial pieces served as compositional, palette and texture studies for larger works...

…from there, certain works were selected to scale up into larger pieces. Ultimately, I hope to create full size works of all 18 compositions. The transition to a larger scale always presents problems and opportunities. The size of the marks and saturation of the paint and other media are immediate questions to wrangle with.

It’s not the intent to make larger versions of smaller works, but to engage the real logistical issues embedded in the arc of the process to bend and evolve the subject matter. Refracting the ideas to the canvas and seeing what appears there.
